You will need a bible handy for this devotional. It would also be helpful to have a piece of paper or journal to right down your thoughts. We have found that writing thoughts down help them to stick in our minds and hearts. It’s also a great way to look back on things you’ve learned.

Let’s talk about humility.

With Christ as our example, we are called to service in BIG ways. Sometimes that means being humble enough to know that our big call to service might be given very little recognition by others. To seek the recognition of man is to say to God that his plan, his pleasure, his reward, his will is not enough. We serve because that is the way of life that Christ showed us. If we want man to recognize anything, it should be Christ in us. So let’s consider why, who, and how we ought to serve.

Read:

Philippians 2:1-18

Mark 10:32-45

2 Corinthians 8:1-15

Questions/Application:

  1. According to these sections of scripture, what character trait(s)/discipline(s) make a servant of Christ?
  2. What might it practically look like for you to serve with humility?
  3. The last section of scripture is not specifically about serving, but about giving in abundance. Think of ways that you can serve your community in abundance, “beyond your means!”

It is easy to think that you have “done your part” or “pulled your weight” in serving people, but consider pushing beyond “enough,” and pray for the humility and strength to outdo one another in showing honor (Romans 12:10) in the way that you serve one another.

Remember that serving is a way that we get to be an example of Jesus.
